Metal Casting - Image 1

DESCRIPTION

The piece begins with parametric modeling in Grasshopper, using Kangaroo physics simulation to generate forms based on surface tension dynamics. The digital model explores how liquid metal naturally seeks minimum surface area, creating organic bubble-like geometries that balance forces across the form. This computational model is then prepared for lost-wax casting, with supports and gates added to ensure proper metal flow. A wax pattern is 3D-printed from the digital file, then invested in ceramic shell material. The wax is burned out, leaving a negative cavity that receives molten sterling silver. The cast form retains the mathematically-generated surface characteristics, freezing the fluid dynamics of surface tension into solid metal. Post-casting finishing includes pickle, polishing, and surface treatment to achieve the final aesthetic.
