Cocoon - Image 1

DESCRIPTION

The structure is fabricated from 20 sheets of basswood and 3 sheets of plywood, laser-cut with intricate patterns that reference religious symbols and iconography. The laser cutting allows for precise, repetitive pattern generation while maintaining structural flexibility necessary for a wearable form. Five yards of metallic space tape creates reflective surfaces that catch light, emphasizing the spiritual themes. Two yards of spandex provide flexible underlayers that allow the rigid wooden structure to move with the body. The pieces are assembled using over eight tubes of adhesive, creating a unified shroud that envelops the wearer. The piece explores transformation and death as natural processes, questioning what exists beyond human experience. Premiered at Boston Fashion Week 2015, the work merges fashion with existential inquiry through material and form.
