Aluminum Swirl - Image 1

DESCRIPTION

The piece is constructed from aluminum sheet stock that has been passed through a roller mill multiple times, creating undulating waves and controlled deformations in the metal. Each pass through the mill creates progressive texture and dimensional changes, with the metal work-hardening as it's shaped. The aluminum components are joined using copper rivets installed through hand-drilled holes, creating cold connections that allow slight movement between elements. This traditional metalworking technique avoids heat, preserving the mill-formed texture and preventing material softening that would occur with welding. The combination of soft aluminum with copper fasteners creates both material and color contrast, while the roller mill textures catch light across the undulating surfaces.
